This year marks a significant milestone for Phantom enthusiasts worldwide as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Hellenic Air Force's F-4 Phantom, affectionately known as the F-4E Φantom. The 338 Squadron, one of the last to fly this legendary aircraft, invites fans to partake in an exclusive artwork contest. This is your chance to leave a creative mark on aviation history by designing a special livery scheme for an F-4 Jet.
The contest celebrates the F-4 Phantom's legacy by focusing on the Greek letter Φ (phi), symbolizing the "Phantom" and highlighting the aircraft's iconic status in the Hellenic Air Force. We encourage livery designs that cover the entire aircraft, including wing tanks, fuselage, and tail. You have the freedom to either complement the current Aegean Ghost scheme or propose a full repaint. Remember, the chosen design will be painted onto a heritage F-4E aircraft, which will serve as a static display, allowing for creative freedom across all surfaces.
To inspire participants, we've put together a series of digital artworks reflecting the F-4 Phantom's legacy. This includes images of 'Spooky,' the Phantom mascot, and mentions of squadrons 338, 339, 337, 348, where the Phantom has served. We're also highlighting the Hellenic Air Force's blue, the national flag, the Aegean Sea, Greek landmarks, and gods like Ares or Zeus for inspiration. Artists are encouraged to include the Greek letter "Φ" (Phi) in their designs, linking it to the Phantom's 50th anniversary in Greek service.
Joining "The F-4E Φantom Artwork Contest" hosted by Airforce.gr, means contributing to a grand celebration. There will be two (2) winners, one for each category:
I. Aircraft livery design
For the aircraft livery design, we're looking for a creative and original design that will be painted on an F-4E Phantom to celebrate its 50 years of service. The design should:
Highlight the Greek letter "Φ" (Phi) to commemorate the Phantom's 50th anniversary. Cover the entire aircraft, including wings and tail, and may enhance the Aegean Ghost scheme or suggest a complete repaint. Draw inspiration from the Hellenic Air Force's colors, the national flag, Greek mythology, and the legacy of the F-4 Phantom.
II. Commemorative patch design.
The patch design will play a central role in the ceremony, to be worn by the staff of 338 Squadron, symbolizing the legacy and pride of the Φantom's 50 years of service. It should align with the guidelines of the livery design, incorporating elements that reflect the heritage of the Hellenic Air Force, Greek culture, and the distinguished history of the F-4 Phantom.
The final decision for this artwork contest will be in the hands of those who know the F-4 Phantom best – the pilots of 338 Squadron, who continue to fly this legendary aircraft. Each winner will receive a unique gift and an exclusive invitation to the official ceremony along with a rare behind-the-scenes tour of the F-4E's home base. All entrants will receive a collector's set of patches and a personalized signed card from the Squadron Staff.
This contest presents a special chance to honor the F-4E Phantom's remarkable legacy and its significant role in the Hellenic Air Force, celebrating this 50-year milestone through your creative expression. Proposals must be submitted in the form of high resolution image but we highly recommend submitted artwork being available also in vector format for optimal versatility.
