The HAF F-4E AUP was conducted to provide an innovative and advanced system for the existing HAF F-4E fleet aircraft. The system was designed to greatly improve the Air-to-Air Attack and Defence as well as the Air-to-Ground Weapon Delivery capabilities. For that reason the HAF F-4E platform was upgraded with a modern, state of
the art avionics system and armament control system, including advanced “glass cockpit†displays and newly
integrated weapon arsenals.
The contract was awarded to EADS Germany, Military Aircraft Business Unit (former Daimler Benz Aerospace)
in the year 1997. EADS-M teamed with Elbit Systems of Israel, as the main subcontractor, amongst different
suppliers, to complete the task of designing, integrating and testing this new weapon system for the Hellenic
Air Force in a short and demanding time scale. After the contract was awarded, an “Integrated Team†was formed by
EADS in order to meet the challenging schedule. The integrated team consisted of members of airframe and system engineering, logistics, production, commercial, certification and flight test. This team was joined by members of the Hellenic Aero-nautical Industry (HAI) and Hellenic Air Force (HAF).
The first F-4E aircraft to be modified was ferried from Greece to Germany in the year of contract award and was used as the “Prototype Aircraftâ€. Along with all the avionic upgrade hard- and software necessary for the modernization an extensive Flight Test Instrumentation (FTI) was incorporated into this aircraft.
