Environmental Protection actions by the Hellenic Air Force

The 5th of June is the World Environment Day and one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. Hellenic Air Force is aware of the need for measures to protect the environment. Under this concept applies numerous measures and programs to ensure the environmental protection. In particular Hellenic Air Force develops actions for the implementation of which follows successful partnerships with third parties (Ministry of Environment, local authorities, waste management companies, etc.).

Some of that actions are the following:

  • Protection of the natural environment through fire-fighting missions, monitoring forests, afforestation.
  • Upgrade of the coasts.
  • Limitation of nuisance from noise through proper design of flight operations and other noisy work.
  • Implementation of alternative management: packaging, paper, batteries, fuel, vehicle and aircraft tires, electrical and electronic equipment, vehicles and machinery, edible oils and fats and bulk metals.
  • Collection and processing performance, especially in the licensed operators of hazardous waste.
  • Treatment of industrial liquid waste at specific sites in the Hellenic Air Force.
  • Processing liquid urban waste in the main units of the Hellenic Air Force.
  • Collection and temporary storage of solid waste of 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital specifically authorized in a contract with the company for incineration.
  • Controlled storage and disposal in specially licensed operators of the radioactive material.
  • Restriction on the use of substances that deplete the ozone layer and replacement alternative.
  • Saving energy by implementing such practices in existing and new facilities, implementing bioclimatic design principles and review the use of renewable energy.
  • Studies rehabilitation butts.
  • Energy and environmental inspections of all units of the Hellenic Air Force.
